Repeat with the other set of wires to the screws on the other side of the transformer marked “B” and “U. Terminal U would be the Hot terminal and should be connected to Terminal 1 center rail of the lock-on. For the first time in fifty years, I’m trying to hook up the family Lionel. Keep asking questions, as there are people here that will know the answer, or we will start a discussion and figure the answer out.
However, there would be no fixed voltage terminals available with this connection scheme. None were mentioned; but that might be the next complication.
Robert Blackson, blackson kultztowm. On my layout I was using four PowerMaster Transformers from the late ‘s, and with an expansion of the layout I needed more power. I decided to go to two W ZWs, and I have, since then, bought more than two because I plan another expansion that will require a third, and I want to have a “backup” to set in place should one need repaired.
So I have some recent experience in buying W ZWs, and I admit to being “burned” on my first purchase.

Jan 05, · I’ve recently inherited a two standard gauge and one O gauge lionel sets that have been in the family. Everything seems to be in working order, but I’m having some difficulty understanding the old Type “K” transformer for the standard gauge trains.
How do I properly oil and lubricate my motor? Too much lubrication is nearly as bad as not enough. Too much lubricant will saturate wiring, insulating material and attract dirt and dust. All of these will greatly shorten the life of your train’s electrical components and harm performance. The greatest damage is usually done to the motor bearings, commutator and the brushes. Once oil finds its way to the commutator, the electrical current passing between the brush and commutator will vaporize the lubricant and glaze the brush surface.
This will increase the resistance between the commutator and the brush. This will result in higher voltages needed to operate the train and greatly increase the arching between the brush and commutator. The end result is a damaged commutator and brushes. Always lubricate the train motor and gears with the manufacturer’s suggested oil. If you do not have the manufacturer’s oil, a quality oil such as 3 in 1 oil will work well Do not use WD ! Cleaning the commutator A clean commutator is vital to an efficient motor.

Their layout covers approximately square feet with multiple parallel tracks and some overhead crossings. Pat Nardella contacted me regarding their problems in February I asked Pat to get back to me with their results so that I could learn from their experiences and pass along any beneficial information to others.
He even included a couple of photos of their layout! I would like to share this report with you. I have [added] a few of my own comments into his report. Hi Dale; I do not know if you remember me. I also purchased the signal strength meter from you. You asked me to get back to you with our results. I thought I would put them down on paper rather than telling you them on the phone.
But first let me thank you for your help; without a doubt, things have improved. Okay, here is a quick review of where we started.

March 9th, An AC2Car circuit primer The heart of the AC2Car system is a simple AC2Car electrical circuit that you can put together at home to run two cars in a common slot with independent control. It is very inexpensive and easy to do. But, you must follow the two circuit schematics carefully in regard to the positioning of the diodes in both the circuit for the controllers and the cars.
This page contains the technical information you will need to wire a track and set up cars for running two cars in one slot with independent control. Below you will find a component list, transformer suggestions, and controller information.

To examine this process, we will start with a voltage waveform before the whistle or horn is activated. The AC waveform is symmetrically centered around the baseline of the oscilloscope trace. The overall output drops slightly because of the loss of half the waveform, but the large DC component pulls in the relay. The switch is then quickly moved to the final stage to bypass some of the missing AC waveform around the diode.
This bypass, combined with the Boost voltage, actually raises the output voltage above the original non-whistle voltage. This extra voltage boost was deemed necessary to provide extra power to drive both the locomotive and the whistle motor so that the train does not slow down. Note that the waveform is shifted upward slightly by the remaining DC voltage. The above waveforms will vary for different models of transformer and the amount of current being sourced.
These photos were taken with a Lionel Model RW watt transformer feeding a 6. The DC-sensitive relay is an interesting bit of engineering.

A problem that may be encountered is providing physical clearance for the diode when installed. Suggested Mounting Remove the old rectifier disc speed nut, mounting pin and insulating spacers. Some customers have “Remote Mounted” the diode and used jumper wires to make the electrical connections to the original rectifier disc location. The electrical capacity of the diode is so high that it can handle extremely high loads without overheating itself or anything around it, so that it may be placed anywhere there is room inside the transformer or outside the transformer case.
Here’s how to do so, courtesy of Chuck Furlong. Railsounds requires use of the Lionel Control Button. The control button has one red and one black wire coming from it. The installation is simple. Wire it in series with the transformer variable post and the track. That is, run one wire to the V post and the other wire to the hot rail NOT the Base rail of your layout. The base post is wired to the base ground rail normally. Your choice of connecting the red wire or the black wire to the transformer will determine whether the button will operate the horn or the bell.
It doesn’t matter much, because the button’s function will also be changed by turning the sound-unit around on the track. To operate BOTH the horn and the bell without changing connections, you will need two buttons.

It is a good idea to save the boxes and corrugated board packing. They will come in handy for storing or transporting your equipment. Check the equipment to see that nothing is missing or broken. Spin all the car wheels to see that they turn freely NOTE: They will only turn under power. And put a small dab of model train lubricant on the ends of the axles.
